Whipsaw Wednesday Underway

The Wednesday before options expiration is usually one of the most volatile trading sessions of the month. As you may know, options expiration occurs on the third Friday of every month. During the trading week leading into options expiration there will usually be a lot of rumors and erratic price movements in many of the leading stocks. Just look at the false report by The Guardian newspaper yesterday as they said that there would be a €2 trillion European bank bailout. Later, reports… Continue

SMF Notes NFLX Netflix upgraded to Outperform at Wedbush; tgt raised to $155;

 believes an acquisition of streaming business by Amazon (AMZN) makes sense (128.50 )

Wedbush upgrades NFLX to Outperform from Underperform and raises their tgt to $155 from $110. Upon reflection, it appears to firm that the driver for the separation of Netflix into two businesses—Netflix.com (for streaming) and Qwikster.com (for DVD rentals)—was to position the streaming business for sale to Amazon.com (AMZN). In its… Continue

SMF Notes NFLX Netflix: Increased streaming costs to limit Netflix's long-term profitability - Wedbush (267.26 )

 Wedbush notes that the New York Post, Starz (which has exclusive first-run premium cable rights for Disney and Sony films) is seeking upwards of $350 mln per year from Netflix to renew its content deal, well above their prior expectation of $150-200 mln per year. In their view, the increase in streaming costs will more than offset savings from declining fulfillment, marketing, DVD purchase, and postage expenses, reducing profitability.

SMF Notes NFLX Netflix target raised to $316 at Caris & Company (235.15 +4.08)

Caris notes, with NFLX cruising past its target yet again on Friday, and up a stealth 26.2% since the company's FQ4 earnings call just 3 weeks ago, firm obviously has the choice between downgrading the stock or raising its target price. Firm is choosing the latter after carefully re-evaluating our COGS profile for 2011 and beyond, and concluding once again, as it did several times in 2010, that its assumptions for COGS are too conservative given that rapid adoption… Continue

SMF Notes NFLX Netflix earnings preview; look for FQ4 EPS beat; F2011 EPS guidance to depend entirely on marketing expense - Caris (182.09 )

Caris notes, similar to NFLX's FQ2 call last July, it's not expecting upside to top line consensus, as the trend towards trading down to the $9.99/month and $7.99/month (streaming only) pricing iterations remained in full force during the December quarter. However, as firm stated consistently throughout 2010, the lowest ARPU category within the NFLX pricing structure is also its highest-margin product, and with the streaming selection now exponentially deeper than… Continue
