Europe's major bourses are mixed at the moment. However, a handful of markets in the eurozone periphery are sporting impressive gains. Italy's MIB is up 0.7%; Spain's IBEX is up 0.6%, and; Greece's Athex 20 is up 3.3%, all despite a series of downgrades for Spanish banks by analysts at Moody's. Germany's DAX is currently up only 0.1%. Deutsche Bank (DB 37.18, +1.34) is a primary leader there following the stock's descent during the past month.…

early Monday as traders cheered new pledges by the leaders of Germany and France to take bold steps to end Europe's debt debacle.

SMF Notes S&P futures vs fair value: +18.70. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: +32.20.

SMF Notes Nasdaq futures vs fair value: -24.30. WRAPX S&P futures vs fair value: -10.20.

Stock futures haven't had much of a reaction to the latest data, mostly because there weren't any big surprises to the numbers. Personal income for August declined by 0.1%,  a 0.1% increase. The unexpected slip comes after income had increased by 0.3% in the prior month. However, personal spending increased by 0.2%, as had been broadly expected. Still, the pickup wasn't as strong as the 0.8% jump that was reported for the prior…

SMF Notes WRAPX S&P futures vs fair value: -10.20. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: -24.30.

Stock futures haven't really had much of a reaction to the latest dose of data, mostly because there weren't any dramatic surprises to the numbers. Personal income for August declined by 0.1%, which contrasts with the consensus call for a 0.1% increase. The unexpected slip comes after income had increased by 0.3% in the prior month. However, personal spending increased by 0.2%, as had been broadly expected. Still, the pickup wasn't as strong as the 0.8% jump…

SMF Notes S&P futures vs fair value:

+12.40. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: +19.00.

Stock futures are up sharply this morning. The bid marks a continuation of the prior session's intraday climb, which helped the major averages settle at session highs. Strong gains abroad have helped perpetuate a positive tone. Most of Asia's major averages scored strong gains overnight. Japan's Central Bank made no changes to its monetary policy. As for Europe, its major… Continue

Stocks had logged back-to-back losses before they entered the holiday weekend, but the break has done anything to cool selling interest. Premarket participants are applying sharp pressure to stocks in response to the steep losses suffered by Europe's major bourses on Monday. Stocks in Europe have rebounded today amid news that the Swiss National Bank set a minimum exchange… Continue

SMF Notes S&P futures vs fair value: +12.40. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: +21.70.

Stock futures are up solidly in an extension of last week's advance, which was the first weekly gain in more than a month. The positive tone ahead of the open has also been bolstered by strong performances by the major bourses of Europe, where news that a merger between EFG Eurobank and Alphabank -- a pair of Greece's financial plays -- has been taken as a sign of progress toward a more stable banking system in the corners of the continent. None of the blue chips… Continue

Stock futures have eased back a bit since making a sharp surge in response to an encouraging monthly payrolls report. Officially, non-farm payrolls increased in July by 117,000, which is greater than the increase of 84,000 that had been expected, on average, among economists polled by Briefing.com. What's more, prior month payrolls were revised upward to reflect an increase… Continue

SMF Notes S&P futures vs fair value:

+2.70. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: +7.50.

Stock futures point to a positive start for today's trade. The uptick comes after the stock market suffered seven straight losses for a cumulative decline of almost 7%. Relief buying has been supported somewhat by a better-than-expected ADP Employment Change, which portends a positive reading of the official payrolls report on Friday. Still to come, though, are the latest… Continue

SMF Notes S&P futures vs fair value: +2.30. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: +5.00.

Stocks are finally getting some relief after the S&P 500 fell in each of the past seven sessions for a cumulative loss of almost 7%. Not only was the prior session's 2.6% loss the worst one-day drop in almost one year, it also left the stock market to settle at its lowest level since March. But after all of that bloodletting, buyers are showing tentative signs of interest. In turn, stock futures suggest that the cash market will open with a modest gain. Of… Continue

Stock futures continue to work their way up from premarket lows. The cash market is still expected to open with a loss, though. Amid lingering weakness, traders have rotated into the dollar, which was recently quoted with a modest lead over a collection of competing currencies. That said, an interest in safety has helped gold prices push up 1.1% to $1639 per ounce. Silver prices are up an even headier 2.3% to $40.23 per ounce. As for oil, the energy component was… Continue

Equity futures are pointing to a flat open as debt ceiling talks make little progress in Washington. Earnings reports continue to come out mostly better than expected as Visa (V) and Green Mountain Coffee (GMCR) were among the companies to beat on both the top and bottom lines following yesterday's close while CME Group (CME) bettered expectations this morning. Earnings results were not all good as IMAX Corp. (IMAX) and Pulte Group (PHM) both missed. Treasuries… Continue

Stress tests late last week have failed to calm concern that precarious fiscal conditions continue to linger in various pockets of the eurozone. In turn, both the euro and the region's major bourses have turned lower to trade with marked losses. Specifically, the euro is off by 0.5% against the greenback, but the EuroStoxx 50 has fallen 1.1%. Germany's DAX is currently down… Continue

The stock market slid late in the prior session to settle at its session low, but an improved mood among morning traders has stock futures looking strong. Impressive GDP data from China have helped shift sentiment. Although gains are mostly modest in Europe, bourses there are seeing some relief from the losses suffered during the first couple of sessions of this week. The euro is also rallying after it fell to a four-month low against the dollar yesterday; the… Continue
