SMF Notes Asian Markets Close:
Nikkei +0.4%, Hang Seng +0.7%, Shanghai +2.7%, Sensex +2.2%
It was a sea of green across Asia as the unexpected expansion of China's trade surplus bolstered gains (CNY16.5 bln actual v. CNY8.3 bln expected, CNY14.5 bln previous). Curiously, the expansion of the middle kingdom's trade surplus came as exports to its two biggest customers, Europe and the U.S., shrunk will exports to ‘other parts of the world' surged. The strong bid in the Shanghai Composite (+2.7%) was aided by word that Chinese regulators are looking to increase investment in capital markets and will look to pension and housing funds for support. Elsewhere in the region, Australian building approvals climbed 8.4% MoM (6.6% MoM previous). Looking at the currencies...USDCNY weakened to 6.3094; USDJPY is flat near 76.80; AUDUSD is stronger at 1.0335. In Japan, the Nikkei closed +0.4% as the two most troubled cos on the index led the way. Embattled Tokyo Electric Power Co initially fell 12% in early action on reports of possible nationalization, but finished up 24% as bargain hunters piled in. Troubled camera maker Olympus surged 20% after a report suggested the stock would be placed on ‘alert' status and will likely avoid delisting for the time being.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng finished +0.7% to close at its best level in a month. Real estate co Country Garden Holdings rallied 5.2% after announcing sales rose 31% in 2011. Cement stocks were strong after Daiwa Capital Markets issued positive commentary on the sector. Anhui Conch Cement led the space with a gain of 7.5%...In China, the Shanghai Composite settled +2.7% as aluminum names rallied following Alcoa's earnings. Aluminum Corp. of China (Chalco) surged 5.3% to lead the space higher.
In India, the Sensex closed +2.2% to finish at its best level in a month as resource-related names led the way. Hindalco rallied 4.3% while Jindal Steel gained 4.1%.
